Stop Puppy Mills Awareness Day

Today, Saturday, September 20th, 2008 is Puppy Mill Awareness Day. So be aware. There are dogs and puppies living in and around Chester County, PA that could at the least, use our thoughts today. They live in deplorable conditions and are abused terribly. I wrote a post, Please Help I Have a Heartbeat Too, which continues to be one of the top clicked through links.

Sometimes the news we bring isn’t happy news. Sometimes its sad news. However, I am shocked at the stories from people when I ask where they got their new pet they are excited about that it could have begun at a source as a Puppy Mill.

Pet stores, Newspaper Ads, Signs on the Road, Internet Ads….. are all possible sources for pets breed from Puppy Mills. If they continue to make money selling them; they are not going to stop what they are doing. Take action! Spread the word!

United Against Puppy Mills has a large voice right now. I’ve seen bumper stickers all over Chester County in my travels about while selling Chester County Houses.

If you are looking for a puppy, please be sure and check out the many rescues in the area. One of my favorites is Main Line Rescue – but there are lots!

  • Kim, this hits very close to home. In Austin, there is a Puppy Mill and when a litter is not perfect, they put the dogs in a big cardboard box and put them at the end of their drive. A local rescue here has a woman that drives by their location every day and if there is a box of puppies, she takes them in, nurses them and puts them up for adoption.

It’s better than them being drowned (which is a common practice in mills) but still so sad- if the woman doesn’t drive by, the babies will die and be disposed of.

We adopted our doggie, Cracker from the rescue and the reason his litter was disposed of? Their ears had too much tan color, so they would not be eligible for shows since they were not pure white. Is that not the craziest reason to kill innocent animals that THE MILLS brought into this world through breeding?!?!!?

Wonderful piece, Kim! Here’s our rescued doggie: http://www.flickr.com/photos/spaustin/2873589127/ (put out to die because he has tan on his ears.)

  • @Lani – It is just heartbreaking – that’s all there is to it…. and we must get the word out there to raise awareness!
